Rafael Capurro

was born in 1945 in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Studied humanities in Chile. Licentiate in Philosophy from the Colegio Máximo, Universidad del Salvador (Buenos Aires, Argentina 1971).

Studies in Documentation at the Lehrinstitut für Dokumentation (LID) (Frankfurt am Main 1972-73).

Doctorate in philosophy at the University of Düsseldorf (1978). Assistant to the managing director of FIZ Karlsruhe (1980-1985). Professor of Information Science and Information Ethics at the Hochschule der Medien (HdM) (1986-2009).


Habilitation in practical philosophy at the University of Stuttgart (1989). Lecturer in Practical Philosophy at the Institute of Philosophy, University of Stuttgart (1989-2004). Founder of the International Center for Information Ethics (ICIE) (1999-2018) (archive).

Member of the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies (EGE) of the EU Commission (2000-2010; new mandate 2016-).

Founding Member of the World Technology Network (WTN). Distinguished Researcher in Information Ethics, School of Information Studies, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, USA (2010-2012).

Senior Fellow of the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Tsukuba, Japan (2015-2017).

Founder and Editor-in-Chief of the International Review of Information Ethics (IRIE) (IRIE 2004-2018).

Director of the Steinbeis Transfer Institute Information Ethics (2008-2013). Member of the Advisory Board of the Institute for Digital Ethics (IDE), Hochschule der Medien (HdM) (since 2014). Emeritus Member of the Board of Advisors ID4Africa (2014-2018).
