The admonishers who had been fighting for a turnaround in Eastern Politics for years were not given a chance. Détente first. No conflict with Russia at all. Now not only the European peace order is history. The war in Ukraine will turn everything upside down.
Regardless of the nightmare that will not only affect Ukraine, the question remains as to why a more effective strategy against Putin’s escalation dominance was never given a chance. Ever since Putin’s history essay in June 2021, experts have been warning against his destructive Ukraine policy. In that text, the Russian president openly questioned Ukraine’s statehood and subsumed it together with Belarus under the umbrella of Russia.
Eastern European historian Martin Schulze Wessel has pointed out the Kremlin’s fatal combination of political and historical goals: “On the basis of this – unacceptable and false – interpretation of history, he could attempt to legitimize annexations. Putin could be trapped in an understanding of history in which he sees a possible war against Ukraine as an internal matter.”
